Baptiste is a spin-off serial from the British TV drama The Missing using one of the central characters, Julien Baptiste, played by Tchéky Karyo. It is produced by Two Brothers Pictures and distributed worldwide by their parent company All3Media.[1] The first series was broadcast on BBC One starting in February 2019 and is written by Jack and Harry Williams, who also wrote The Missing. In the United States, it was broadcast by PBS on its series Masterpiece beginning on 12 April 2020.[2] A second series began on BBC One on 18 July 2021.[3]

Synopsis[edit]

All is not as it seems with Edward and the show also introduces Kim Vogel, who has a criminal history and Constantin, a Romanian national who is seen murdering and dismembering a victim at the start of the programme.[5][6]

A meter reader kills a man in the English seaside town of Deal, Kent. While Julien Baptiste is in Amsterdam with his family, an old friend, Martha, from the Dutch police, asks him to search for a missing sex worker, Natalie Rose. He meets Edward Stratton, who claims to be Natalie's uncle and the two men delve into the criminal underworld of Amsterdam's red light district. The meter reader turns up in a seedy Amsterdam pool hall and later 'bumps' into Baptiste's wife and grand daughter at the supermarket. Baptiste notices a street kid following him and Stratton who tells them about the 'Dream Room' brothel. A Dutch tulip farmer finds a pendant and silver chain on his field. Baptiste takes a call that leads them to Kim Vogel, a woman who runs a cafe and a 'collective' for sex workers and directs them to Germany. Martha e-mails Baptiste information about Dragomir Zelincu and Baptiste revisits Kim Vogel, who gives him Natalie's location. At the tulip farm, the farmer's german shepherd digs up something at the end of a tulip row.

Production[edit]

The BBC announced in April 2018 that a spin-off from its successful The Missing series would go into production and was set to be broadcast in 2019.[9][10]

Most of the action is set in Amsterdam in the Netherlands; although some exterior scenes were shot there, some were actually filmed in Antwerp and Ghent in Belgium.[11] Additionally, a handful of scenes were shot in Deal, Kingsdown, Ramsgate and Sandwich, all in Kent, England.[12]

The series consisted of six episodes, all being broadcast on a Sunday evening.[13]

A second and final series began on BBC One on 18 July 2021.[3]

Reception[edit]

Carol Midgley writing in The Times, gave the first episode three out of five and declared the first 45 minutes to be 'underwhelming', though the last 15 minutes picked up and left her 'semi-intrigued'.[14]The Guardian described the programme as a 'slowburning spin-off' and 'the opener draws you into a darkly compelling plot'.[15]

The Daily Telegraph described the first series as 'worth sticking with' and gave it three out of five.[5]

Moonshiners is an Americandocudrama television series on the Discovery Channel produced by Magilla Entertainment that dramatizes the life of people who produce (illegal) moonshine in the Appalachian Mountains of Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The series dramatizes their liquor production efforts, law-evading techniques and life.[1]There have been claims by local officials that the show is not what it portrays to be. Virginia authorities have stated that no illegal liquor is actually being produced by the people depicted in the show. The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) said in March 2012 that, 'If illegal activity was actually taking place, the Virginia ABC Bureau of Law Enforcement would have taken action.'[2] They also said that they had requested for the producers to add a disclaimer to clarify that the show was only a dramatization, 'but the request was overlooked',[2] and the show's producers, Magilla Entertainment, have stated their documentary content is real.[3]

Portions of the show that feature Marvin 'Popcorn' Sutton were taken from a documentary film by Neal Hutcheson. Hutcheson's documentary was filmed in 2002 and released the same year with the title This is the Last Dam Run of Likker I'll Ever Make.[4] In 2008, a version of the documentary that was edited for television was broadcast on PBS[citation needed] and the Documentary Channel[5] with the title The Last One, and it received a Southeast Emmy Award in 2009.[6] Sutton was arrested in 2007 by ATF agents in Cocke County, Tennessee (led by Jim Cavanaugh of Waco siege fame) for illegally distilling liquor and possession of a handgun by a felon, and was sentenced to eighteen months in jail in 2009. He subsequently died by suicide, apparently to avoid serving the federal prison term, and because he had been diagnosed with cancer.[7]

The show's first season premiered on December 6, 2011, and its second season premiered on November 7, 2012. Season 3 premiered on November 3, 2013. Season 4 premiered on November 4, 2014.[8] Season 5's premiere date was November 17, 2015. Season 8 premiered on January 2, 2019.[9]

The ninth season premiered on November 19, 2019.[10] The series was renewed for a tenth season on November 4, 2020 with a premiere date of November 24, 2020.[11]
